17-year-old Austin Metcalf fatally stabbed, Karmelo Overton arrested

FRISCO, TX — A tragic incident unfolded Wednesday morning during a UIL track meet in Frisco, where 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, a local high school student, was fatally stabbed. The suspect, identified as 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony, is currently in custody and facing murder charges after allegedly confessing to the stabbing.

According to an arrest affidavit, the altercation began when Metcalf reportedly told Anthony, a student at Centennial High School, to move from under Memorial High School’s team tent. A witness told police that Anthony responded by reaching into his bag and warning Metcalf, “Touch me and see what happens.” When Metcalf touched him and later tried to grab Anthony to move him, Anthony allegedly pulled a black knife from his bag and stabbed Metcalf once in the chest.

Anthony fled the scene, but was later apprehended. During the arrest, Anthony reportedly told officers, “I was protecting myself,” and admitted to the stabbing before any formal questioning. He also asked if his actions could be considered self-defense.

The affidavit notes fresh blood on Anthony’s hand and that the knife was later recovered in the bleachers. Anthony is currently being held at the Collin County jail on a $1 million bond.

The incident has sparked a heated debate, with family members of Anthony claiming on social media that he acted in self-defense after being bullied and attacked. Legal experts, however, caution that proving self-defense will be challenging, as the victim was unarmed.

Austin Metcalf, who worked part-time with his mother and twin brother, Hunter, is being remembered as a kind and hardworking teen. A GoFundMe page has been created to support the Metcalf family with funeral and legal expenses, and a fundraiser is being planned at Halo Pizzeria.

The track meet has been rescheduled to Monday and relocated to Little Elm High School, with the district promising increased security measures.
