Ahead of Wednesday night’s game against the Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball shared an emotional moment that transcended basketball. Ball met the family of Alex Reinhardt—the young man whose tissue donation played a pivotal role in Ball’s return to the court following a groundbreaking knee procedure.
Alex Reinhardt passed away in February 2023 at just 20 years old. His medial condyle was transplanted into Ball’s left knee via allograft—a rare and complex surgery that gave Lonzo a chance to continue his professional career after multiple setbacks and nearly two years away from the game.
Before the game, Lonzo spent time with Alex’s family, including his mother Angie, father Carl, brothers Seth and Cole, and Cole’s fiancée Kia. The meeting was filled with emotion, reflection, and gratitude.
“It’s been extremely emotional,” Angie said. “But so much happiness comes with it too. Of course we wish he was here. But he was the kid that always liked to help people. So for him to be able to keep helping people after his death, it really feels like a blessing.”
Lonzo Ball has been candid about the long, painful road to recovery, acknowledging the seriousness of his condition and the improbability of a return. Yet, thanks in part to Alex’s donation, Ball defied the odds.
This powerful encounter underscored the incredible impact of organ and tissue donation—not just in saving lives, but in giving people second chances.
